The Internet is home to a plethora of small businesses that fall into the multi
level marketing (MLM) category. One of the hallmarks of multi level marketing
is the fact that anyone and everyone can get involved in the business and thus
it is not surprising to find individuals with little or no training in medicine and
natural healing participating in the sale of herbal medicines. Since nutritional
supplements – and by extension herbal medicines – are one of the most popular
items being bought and sold online, it is only a matter of time until you will
begin looking at a particularly interesting advertising that will make claims
appealing to you.

    In the United States, herbs
    intended for preventive or
    therapeutic use would be
    regulated as drugs under
    federal laws. To evade the
    law, these products are
    marketed as "foods" or
    "dietary supplements"
    without health claims on
    their labels. Since herbs are
    not regulated as drugs, no
    legal standards exist for
    their processing,
    harvesting, or packaging. In
    many cases, particularly for
    products with expensive raw
    ingredients, contents and
    potency are not accurately
    disclosed on the label.

Many products marked as herbs contain no useful ingredients, and some
even lack the principal ingredient for which people buy them. Surveys have
found have found that the ingredients and doses of several products varied
considerably from brand to brand.

Yet do you know how to recognize online scams related to herbal medicines
and how to avoid them? Are you aware that there is a plethora of exception
drugs which are rightfully touted as being marvelously effective and useful,
while at the same time there is a cornucopia of knock-offs, pretenders, and
even downright dangerous herbal medicines that will not heal, help, or relieve
pain but instead by actually bring on serious health conditions and may even
be fatal? Since the Food and Drug Administration does not oversee the natural
supplement trade and thus will not protect you from outlandish claims of the
majority of manufacturers, it is up to you, the consumer, to do you homework.

Online scams related to herbal medicines and how to avoid them does not
have to be a mystery and here are three surefire ways of making sure you stay
safe and healthy:

1.        Educate yourself with the help of FDA bulletins with respect to
dangerous substances found in herbal compounds. Even though the agency
does not regulate and test the majority of herbal medicines, if there are a
significant number of complaints with respect to one manufacturer or product,
more often than not an investigation is launched. Findings are published on
the agency’s website and consumers will find out which manufacturers,
companies, and substances to stay away from.

2.        Look for and read the ingredients list. Even though some companies
hide it in the fine print and it must be accessed via a number of click through
options, there should be a complete listing of each and every item that goes
into the herbal medicine you are considering. If you are up on your herbs, you
will have the advantage of knowing if a concoction is likely to do what it claims
or if it might be dangerous. If you lack this knowledge, take the list to your
doctor for review.

3.        Do not equate “Chinese” with guaranteed. Although Chinese herbal
medicines have long since been known to be highly effective and specialized
due to centuries of refining and added knowledge of plants and medical
advances, many a manufacturer is abusing the understanding that the Chinese
medicines are high quality and thus although a substance may be reputed to
be Chinese, it might just be coming from down the street or across the state
line. Read the fine print and find out where the item is manufactured, the herbs
harvested, and the item packaged. You might be in for an unpleasant surprise!
